Volcano Mount Sinabung Erupts for First Time in 400 Years

Volcano Mount Sinabung in western Indonesia had its first eruption in 400 years early Sunday morning 29 August, sending sand and ash up to a mile high.

The sand and ash have caused no major damage, but has covered trees and plants, according to The Associated Press.

The volcano was last recorded to have erupted in 1600.

The volcano, which started rumbling a few days ago, has ceased most of its morning eruption. Lava has only spread around its crater.

Evacuations of the surrounding area began on Friday, when the first signs of activity were observed. Thousands of people left their homes to stay in evacuation centers, such as government buildings and places of worship outside of the four-mile radius around the volcano. They were given facemasks and medicines for respiratory infections.
